GULP - Japan was devastated by a massive earthquake, followed by giant tsunami waves. More than a thousand victims, hundreds missing. The quake had a magnitude of 8.9, was recorded at 6:46 Italian time (14:46 in Japan), with epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, 24 km deep and 130 km from the northern prefecture of Miyagi. The earthquake and ensuing tsunami were determined by longitudinal rupture of a fault length of 400 kilometers, caused by opposing forces of the Pacific Plate and the Euro-Asian. It 'was, says the Japanese Meteorological Agency, the most powerful quake ever recorded in the country and among the ten most powerful of the last 150 years. Declared an emergency for a nuclear power plant, without airports, trains and subways, while about ten meters high waves hit the coast, with water that has gone for up to five kilometers inland.
